Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends (Revelation 3:20).
How many times have we heard a knock at the door and thought to ourselves, Oh, no! Not company now ? Maybe the house was a mess. Or perhaps you had a tough day and were too tired to entertain. Or worse, maybe it was someone trying to sell you something. Regardless, we heard the knocking, but wanted to avoid opening the door. Other times we may be busy concentrating on something, or in another part of the house, or simply outside and we simply don’t hear the knocking.
Jesus is always knocking at the door to our heart. He doesn’t care how messy it is. He doesn’t expect to be entertained. He’s not trying to sell you anything. He just wants you to let Him in. Why? Because He loves you and sees your life and all of the things you struggle with. He sees how those struggles weight you down until you feel you can’t bear up under them. When you let Him in, Jesus will say, Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light (Matthew 11:28-30). While the struggles won’t necessarily vanish, the burden for dealing with will be taken on by Him. Your only burden will be to turn those struggles over to Him.
Once you have opened the door to your heart to Jesus, you need to keep Him there. Don’t close the door in His face or try escape from His presence through that same door. Remember to be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic…, For the LORD your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you (Deuteronomy 31:6).
I remember when I was a kid, a great party trick was to have someone sit down with their eyes closed. Then a couple of other kids would press down on the seated one’s head and shoulders–creating the sensation of great physical weight. When they all stopped, the seated one would have the sensation of beginning to float. While turning your burdens to Jesus won’t make you float, you will feel much lighter spiritually. And that’s no parlor trick.
